The geriatric specialty area within the physical therapy profession focuses on the prevention, evaluation, and management of age‑related conditions that affect the functional mobility, physical capacity, and quality of life of older adults. This specialty addresses the complex interplay of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and integumentary systems as they relate to aging. The board‑certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy is a specialist in the effective and efficient examination, treatment, and reassessment of older adults to promote safe mobility, functional independence, participation, and overall health across the continuum of aging.

In 1989 the APTA House of Delegates approved board certification in the area of geriatric physical therapy. The first Geriatrics Specialist Certification Examination was given in February 1992. As of July 2025, ABPTS has certified 4,500 geriatric specialists.

The Role of the Geriatric Specialty Panel

ABPTS Specialty Panels develop minimum eligibility requirements for certification and recertification in a specialty area based on ABPTS guidelines, and when required screen applicants for eligibility to sit for exams and for recertification. Specialty Panel members are responsible for developing the examination instruments in consultation with the ABPTS testing agency and approved consultants.
